MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR BENJAMIN J. CAYETANO
TO OCEAN98'S UN SEAHORSE

March 23, 1998

On behalf of the people of the State of Hawaii, I send my greetings, and warmest aloha, to the captain and crew of the virtual ship, UN Seahorse. It is a great honor to welcome you to Hawaii, the Ocean State, as a significant port-of-call on your virtual Pacific voyage of discovery and research during 1998 -- the Year of the Ocean.

Hawaii has been blessed with a magnificent natural environment -- blue skies, clear ocean waters, sandy beaches, and mountains that rise abruptly from the sea. With a tidal coastline of 1052 miles, the fourth largest in the nation, Hawaii is one of only two states harboring extensive coral reefs inhabited by a vast array of marine life. We invite you to explore these treasures during your virtual visit to our islands and surrounding waters.

The pioneering spirit of the ancient Hawaiians, traversing the ocean in canoes while skillfully reading the stars, is very much alive today. It guides us as we move into a new century of exploration -- from the ocean depths to the far reaches of outer space.

We welcome you, the virtual travelers on the UN Seahorse, and we look forward to the day when we can greet you in person as a guest in our islands.

                               Aloha,

                            [ /S/ - Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano ]

                        BENJAMIN J. CAYETANO
